Competence clarification
In mid-1999, the German aviation authorities LBA will begin to administer the files of
all pilots who are holding an instrument rating. Aerokurier editor in-chief, Volker
Thomalla, in his editorial, demands that this competence transfer to the LBA will not lead
to higher costs or longer waiting periods for the pilots concerned.

FEATURE
Catalina flies environmental missions for Greenpeace
The aircraft is as spectacular as its mission. With a Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina,
Greenpeace is tracking down drift net fishers in the Mediterranean.
The Catalina not only proves to be a useful tool in capturing the illegal fishers. It
is also a very demanding aircraft for the pilots who are flying missions of up to eight
hours duration. And: all the flying is manual, the 56 year old oldtimer does not have an
autopilot.

MOTOR FLYING
Unleaded aviation gasoline
The Swede Lars Hjelmberg has not only upgraded his Warrior II into a silent aircraft,
he has also developed an unleaded aviation gasoline which is approved by the large engine
manufacturers. With its 160 hp, the PA-28-161 is flying up to 131 kts and its noise level
of 73,1 Decibel is nine Decibel below the normal noise emission level of that aircraft
type. This major improvement is mainly based on a four-blade propeller from Rosenheim,
Germany based supplier Hoffmann, along with a special muffler developed by Liese in
Unterhaching, Germany.

MAGAZINE
Pilot watches
Even though flying just on a stop-watch and a compass is not very common any more
today, a pilot watch is almost standard on every airmans wrist. We show the history
of aviator watches along with a market survey of some of the current models.
Floatplane pilots in Berlin: Seaport Wannsee
This years largest European floatplane meeting took place in Berlin. Participants
came from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scotland, France, Sweden, Norway, Austria, USA,
Russia and Germany. The historic background for turning the Wannsee swimming area into the
Seaport Wannsee was the Berlin Airbridge 50 years ago in which floatplanes participated.
German aerobatic championships 1998 in Großenhain
The German aerobatic championships 1998 will go into history as one of the most odd
ones. A new competition class was not popular at all and the master class was not even
started. In the entry-level category, Ulrich Benning (Pitts Special) came in first with
200 points while Rolf Hankers succeeded in the transition category with almost 400 points.
In the step-up category, Willy Baumgärtl succeeded on Zlin 50LS, as did this
categorys second and third ranked participants.

TRAVEL
Lets fly Hawaii
For five years, Ute Hölscher has lived on Hawaii and worked as instructor pilot.
Matthias Prugger came to Hawaii for a flying vacation. Both pilots never met. However,
their stories compliment each other perfectly in giving a picture of what one can discover
when flying in the 50th state of the USA.

PRACTICE
Starting the engine correctly
Starting an aircraft engine correctly is sometimes easier said than done. Certainly,
many of us pilots have already experienced difficulties in getting an engine to run at
some point. This article gives valuable tips for all cases.
Starting the engine correctly; Tips for trips: Jersey
In three hours to the island: Mediterranean ambiance and a unique combination of
British lifestyle with French Savoir vivre, along with a touch of Riviera make a short
trip to the Channel Islands with the aircraft worth it. The flight itself is not
difficult. However, before taking off, there are a few difficulties to cope with.
Accident analysis: engine failure
A hose clamp, a part worth only Pfennig, brakes in the end resulting in four
dead people. This accident analysis describes how after a complete oil loss and the
resulting engine failure, the emergency landing of a Gardan GY-180 ends disastrous.

ULTRALIGHT
STOL CH 701: Form follows function
No field is to short, no runway to rough. The Zenith STOL CH 701 is a true bush
aircraft in ultralight format.
We have flown the two-seater for you and were surprised by the unique flight
characteristics of this aircraft. High-lift devices and the Rotax 912 engine make the
two-seater a real STOL aircraft. On the other, flying longer distances takes a little bit
more time. The light high-wing is the right aircraft for all of those seeking an
individual aircraft.
1st ultralight safety training: More than just a refresher
Safety trainings are common for motor pilots. From 18 to 20 September, the German Aero
Club offered the first training especially for ultralight pilots. The practice program was
developed in co-operation with the flying school Hans Grade and focused on flying at the
limit of the flight envelope and reacting correctly in unusual situations.
Pretty Flight receives type certification
The new Pretty Flight received its type certification on 25 September. The Mindelheim
based PC-Flight now plans to intensify the marketing of the all-metal high-wing. We
presented the aircraft in detail already in our September issue.
New fast-kit for the FK 12 Comet
Speyer, Germany based B & F is now offering a so called 85 percent kit for the FK
12 Comet. With the fast kit (250 hours building time), company head Peter Funk is aiming
at the builders for whom a conventional kit takes too much time to build.

GLIDING
New touring motor-glider: A Carat for touring and gliding
The Carat is a modern composite aircraft from Technoflug in Schramberg. The single-seat
aircraft compliments todays market of mainly two-seat touring motor-gliders. The
Carat is based on the successful standard class Discus from Schempp-Hirth. The wing comes
from the Discus and is structurally strengthened, while Technoflug has developed a
fuselage with a reliable Saur four-cycle engine S1800 (54 hp) in the front. The Carat is
featuring a unique folding-design propeller. Unlike preceding designs as in the RF-4,
SFS-31, ASK 14 and the Akaflieg D-39, Carats propeller blades are folding forward
into an aerodynamically ideal position in gliding conditions and unfold for powered flight
without the pilot having to move one lever. The aircraft stands on a stable two-wheel
landing gear which not only gives the necessary ground clearance but can be retracted into
the lower forward fuselage.
Avionics upgrade: transponder for gliders
There are designated transponder airspaces since September. All aircraft must carry
transponders in these airspaces. Are there suitable transponders for gliders available?
The article presents two transponder sets which could be used provisionally.
Integrated safety: New push for rescue systems
Why are the ultralight aircraft proven rescue systems not already available for
gliders? The German national team wants to push the development.
German championships of the women in Jena-Schöngleina
41 pilots were competing at this years German gliding championships of the women.
"It was a well organized and a very harmonic German championships and an excellent
advertisement for competition flying", praised European champion Gundula Goeke, who
successfully defended her title as German champion in the standard class in Jena.
Innovative technology: hydraulic driven winch
The flying group Renchtal has developed and built a new winch with an innovative
hydraulic motor. The winch has been in operation at the gliding field Musbach since the
spring of this year. Up to this practice test, the flying group Renchtal has invested more
than 3500 man hours in three years.
New 100 km/h speed limit for trailers
In a large-scale test, Germany is raising the speed limit for trailers from 80 km/h to
100 km/h on highways and primary roads. We explain the prerequisites for participating in
this test.
Further gliding news, for example concerning the European championships of the women
and the German championships of the juniors, can be found under airSPORT and NEWS Gliding.

SPECIAL BUSINESS AVIATION
Editorial: sounding out the branch
The Business Aviation Special has developed into a unique branch guide. Each year since
1993, we have been questioning executive charter companies in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland to give us their opinion on the market. The results are very interesting and
display a trend. This year for the first time, 57 percent of the participating companies
considered the market prospects for the branch with "positive" or "rather
positive".
Business jets: Range before size
There has been a fragmentation of the business jet market over the past years. The
manufacturers are offering a wide scale of products, ranging from entry-level jets to
business liners.
The new business jets
Facts and data for the new jets.
Business aircraft in company flight departments
Thousands of companies worldwide are using their own business aircraft as a business
tool. In Germany, many companies try to make a secret out of operating an aircraft.
Explanations such as "We must protect our managers from kidnapping. It is important
that nobody knows which means of transportation they are traveling with" are often
heard. Thats only an excuse. Many companies have an image problem and dont
know how to "sell" the aircraft to their own employees. This report shows who is
operating which aircraft.
Registering business aircraft in foreign country
More and more domestic companies are registering their business aircraft in other
countries. Dr. Heinz Schäfer explains the advantages and disadvantages of this procedure.
Signature-Zimex Flight Support
With approximately 40 different locations, Signature Flight Support is one of the large
service providers for General Aviation in the US. New locations are to bring this service
to Europe.
101 helicopters at the Formula 1
The record number of 101 helicopters was involved in the Formula 1 race at the
Nürburgring on 27 September, 1998. Never before were that many civil rotary aircraft at
one place in Europe.
Market survey: Executive charter companies
Market survey with 124 charter companies for bushes aircraft and helicopters in
Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
