The long way to Europe

The European JAR-FCL (Joint Aviation Regulations for Flight Crew Licensing) have passed. The regulations are to be implemented into national law by mid-1999. However, the pilot training in Europe will not become as standardized as originally planned. The JAA member states still have loopholes, allowing them to grant the national licenses aside from the European licence.

There is no European thinking when it comes to aerospace trade fairs. The British SBAC has announced its plans to host the Farnborough Airshow almost at the same time as the ILA opens its doors in Berlin. However, should the British plans succeed in degrading Germany’s ILA to a regional airshow, this may well turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory .

In the INTERNATIONAL EXPRESS pages, among other topics, you can read about:

The Bombardier Global Express took off on October 14, 1996, for its first flight in Toronto. The new business jet, which is powered by two BMW Rolls-Royce turbofans, is now to accomplish a 2000 flight-hour test program.

The Pulsar kits, many of which were already sold to German customers, are now being manufactured by Sky Star. The company had recently taken over Texas based Aero Design.

The Gordon Bennett race for gas balloons was again won by a German team. Taking off in Warstein, Wilhelm Eimers and Bernd Landmann won the first prize after a 15-hour ride, covering more than 1286,9 kilometers distance and reaching into the transsylvanic Alps.

The Merril C. Meigs Field, Chicago’s unique city airport, is closed. Still, a court order stopped the excavators once more from leveling the area.

BUSINESS AVIATION

Super King Air with quiet cabin

Are heavy isolation materials out? Electronics reduce the noise level inside the cabin of the King Air up to 12 dB(C). For the first time in Germany, Beechcraft Augsburg installed the NVX Active Noise Control System in a business aircraft. An efficient computer is the heart of the system.

MAGAZINE

Flight safety training:

The German Aero Club (DAeC) once again trained pilots in flight safety aspects. Not only were buried practical abilities and theoretical knowledge being brushed up; an introduction into flying in the Alps was a highlight for many of the course participants.

El Dorado for Dragon Fly

Simple light helicopters are becoming increasingly popular in Italy. The two-seater Dragon Fly is one of the driving forces of this development. More than 40 aircraft were sold in only two years. We have found out what makes this helicopter so successful.

SINGLES AND TWINS

Meeting with an old warrior

Biplanes are fascinating, even more so if they are called Boeing Stearman. In this very personal feature, Michael Schultz writes about "the beginning of a long friendship". You can read how he approached flying with the former military trainer aircraft.

TRAVEL

Seven to fall in love with

The third part of the aerokurier series "Around Germany". This time we take you with us for an island hopping trip over the East Frisians. Useful information for your short-break vacation with an aircraft.

PRACTICE

Off-road training for pilots

Many pilots know about short take-off techniques. But, do you also know the right procedure for take-offs and landings on soft surfaces? We inform you about the right softfield techniques.

Sham costs: When do the tax authorities move in for the kill?

There is a big discussion concerning the question of pilot licenses being deducted from your taxes. There is the possibility for you to save ready cash. After you have read our guide through the tax jungle you will know when licenses are deductible and when not.

Clouds and their origin

A clear theoretical explanation is the best basis for practical usage. We combine both for you.

Crash due to heart problems?

The German transport safety board could not clearly identify the reason for the crash of a Cessna 172. Health problems of the pilot may have been one reason.

ULTRALIGHT

Delta Dart II

aerokurier was the first outsider that was allowed to fly the just recently certified Delta Dart II. The all-plastic delta canard design is the first really new innovation on the UL market in years. The flying characteristics are convincing. However, the fatal crash of Klaus Richter, designing engineer and owner of Richter Flugzeugbau, puts a question mark on the future of the two-seater.

Variable propeller with alternatives

Many of the variable pitch propellers used with ULs are a source of problems. Peter Rospert is now producing his new Rospeller which can be manually or electrically adjusted.

GLIDING

Four thousand k in a wave

Although they had only booked a long-distance flight course, the four pilots came home with 1000-kilometer diplomas in their pockets. A fascinating report on a fantastic long-distance out and return flight from Serres in Southern France into Italy and back, most of the route flown in a wave generated by the Mistral wind.

Aerobatic championship of the two-seaters

The community of aerobatic glider pilots is growing. But many of them don’t have a high-performance single-seater available. However, they have the opportunity to compete in the aerobatic two-seater championship which was held for the ninth time, this year in Blumberg.

What happens in a spin?

Having explained the spin entry in the last issue, this follow-on article goes into the details of the motion encountered during the spin itself. An analysis that is supposed to help in preventing accidents.

Opinion column: A plea for the race class

In the past few years many gliders have appeared on the market which don’t really fit into the three FAI classes. The result is that more and more index judgements are flown at competitions to get usable scores. Ernst Schwarz thinks that index scores don’t allow a real comparison of the pilots. According to him, a fair competition is only possible in the FAI classes.

FLYING

Paragliding

It is the dream of many and probably the most simple way to get airborne. Ernst Gruschka, an experienced PPL pilot, has looked over the fence and participated in a beginner’s course in paragliding. He is now hopelessly infected by the fascination of the natural way of flying under a chute.
